Red is determined to mind his own business as he watches Chloe walk away with the cat, but five minutes later finds himself at her door to check on her. He tries to convince himself that he is only checking on her because she is a tenant and tries to ignore his growing attraction to her by reminding himself that she is “an unrepentant snob who’d possibly spied on him last night” (55). When Chloe answers the door, Red teases her, saying that he hears there is a cat in her apartment, and he would like to check. Chloe lets him in, and he notes her disorganized living space full of boxes, clutter, a “rainbow of prescription medication” (57), and the cat. When he points the cat out to Chloe, she pretends to not see it and asks Red to make them a cup of tea. He asks whether she is used to having servants and when she responds “Oh, yes” (57) it is then that Red realizes that Chloe often speaks with a “deadpan, oddly self-deprecating” (57) sense of humor.
Chloe excuses herself to the bathroom and Red goes to her kitchen to begin making tea. He finds a card for her business, Sublime Design Online, and remembers that he agreed to make a website for his art.
