The Friend Zone

Josh stays at the hospital with Kristen and Sloan for hours. He does not get to visit Brandon for a while because the priority is for immediate family. He watches Kristen care for Sloan and realizes that life is too short and fragile to spend any more time away from the woman he loves. He doesn’t just want to date her; he wants to marry her.

Eventually, he is allowed to visit Brandon. Sloan is there, too. She suggests that Josh talk to Brandon, who may be able to hear them. Josh persuades the nurse to let Sloan stay overnight with Brandon. He then convinces Kristen that they need to go home to eat and sleep. He puts an arm around her, but she pushes it off. She insists that they are not going to be in a relationship and that it’s not even open for discussion. Josh is angry, and she tautly reminds him that she knows not having children would be a huge sacrifice for him. Josh insists that she is different from Celeste, who never wanted to have children at all; Kristen wants children but cannot have them herself.
